      James Brown Hayes

      BARNEY ? James Brown Hayes, 83, of Barney, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center.

      Mr. Hayes was born on August 14, 1922, in Brooks County to the late Irvin and Hattie Rowell Hayes. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. He was a member of the Morrison Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

      Survivors include his wife, Christine Hayes of Barney; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy Gantt of Clinton, S.C., Wanda and Teddy Tehonica of Griffin, and Dianne and Benny Hancock of Lowndes County; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Billy and Jean Hayes of Ninety Six, S.C., Ronny and Alice Hayes of Barney, Tommy Hayes of Valdosta, and Craig and Sherry Hayes of Valdosta; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Julius and Martha Hayes of Helen; and three sisters, Louise Gay of Brooks County, Christelle Goodin of Lowndes County, and Lethenia Nesbitt of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Hayes, and a grandson, Stan Andrews.

      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at the Morrison Baptist Church with the Rev. John David Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Morrison Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
