  • Notes
    • From Find A Grave from Robyn MacMillan:

      60th wedding anniversary:
      M. S. Shepard and Susan Detherage
      were married in Knoxville, Illinois,
      May 9, 1850, or 60 years ago
      Monday of this week. And in honor
      of this occasion neighbors and relatives
      from a distance to the number
      of thirty gathered at their home to
      enjoy the day with them. The age
      of the groom is 87 years while that
      of the bride is 78 and both are enjoying
      fair health for ones of their
      years. An elaborate dinner was served
      and the day was made one long
      to be remembered by Mr. and Mrs
      Shepard and their guests. Mr. Shepard
      has been a member of the Masonic
      lodge for 63 years and with
      this fact, in view some of the members
      of that order made, up a purse
      of $30.50 and called at their home
      Monday evening and presented it to
      them. The members of the lodge
      who were there were: H. H. Heinsfurter,
      Dr. F. M. Kelsay, Supt. H. A. Glackemeyer,
      W. A. Stillians; J. Y. Wickeraham, J. C. Whitehill,
      P. D. Minick, F.L. Roninson, A. D. Wycoff; D.E. Lomas;
      Dr. J. H Osborn; J.M.Tinsley; and W. O. Van Camp.
      The presentation speech was.made
      by Supt. Glackemeyer and was responded
      to by both the bride, and groom. The bride
      gave a very interesting talk on their married life
      and some of the hardships they have
      passed through together. Holding up
      her hands she said "these have been
      my sewing machine for seventy-two
      years". The relatives present from out of town,
      were: Julia Gardner of Monmouth, Illinois;,
      Ida Hahn, of Rio, Illinois; Mrs. Daniel Detherage
      and children, Roxie, Verla and Everett of Rio, Illinois;
      G.W. _______ of Warrensburg, Missouri;
      Mrs. Eva Shepard of Bedford, Iowa; Franik Iddings
      and wife and daughter Mrs. Nancy Iddings,
      Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Stewart; S. J. Hattan of Red Oak
      and E. A. Shepard and his wife and son Manford
      of Oakland, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Shepard have enjoyed
      the respect of Villisca people for
      nineteen years, having come here in
      1891, and all join, in wishing them
      many more years of happy wedded
      life. A piece of poetry was composed
      and read by Mrs. Ida Hahn.
