Notes |
- 1900 Census Liberty, Barry, Missouri as Mattie HOWARD
1920 census her name is stated as Mattie Davis and she states she is widowed. She is with her daughter Beulah and is living with Rosa Piere. Did Elmer die prior to the date we have listed as 1935?
1940 Census Joplin, Jasper, Missouri as Mattie HARTLEY
- With Permission from Thomas Scribner:
We have little information about the early life of Mattie Malvina Howard. Oral tradition in our family has it that Mattie was born and raised in Indian Territory now known as Webber's Falls, Oklahoma.
Her father John Howard had served with the Union during the Civil War and Mattie was an active member of the Daughters of Civil War Veterans. Mattie was quite proud of her father and her membership. The Joplin Globe newspaper once published a short article about the local membership that included a photo of Mattie and the chapter's remaining surviving members.
Mattie was married 5 times. She married Elmer Thompson Davis (having her only child with him), Mr. Tennis, Roy Shreve, Walter Hartley, and Joseph Otis Faubion; with that order of marriages believed to be correct. I intend to visit the courthouse in Carthage, Missouri, to research the marriage certificates for Jasper County in hopes of finding more information about Mattie's husbands.
While living in Joplin, Missouri, Mattie had worked for the Frisco Railroad. In her later years, Mattie lived with her mother Harriett, and daughter Beulah. These women were very close.
Mattie passed away on July 26, 1975, in Joplin, Missouri, as a result of heart disease. She had been in failing health for some time. Mattie is buried in the Dice Cemetery located in Fairview, Newton County, Missouri. She is buried next to her mother Harriett and her daughter Beulah. Mattie's father John is buried in another section of this cemetery
Mattie's gravemarker is inscribed:
MOTHER
Mattie M. Faubion
May 7, 1890
July 26, 1975
Mattie wanted the name Faubion inscribed on her gravemarker even though her husband Joe had died over twenty years earlier and at a time when he and Mattie were separated waiting to be divorced.
My Gramma Mattie was a loving and kind person who instilled Christian values in her family. She was loved by her family and friends and was liked and well respected in her church and community. I remember her as being a very proud woman. Her pride was especially evident when she spoke of her childhood when her family had lived amongst members of the Cherokee Tribes in Oklahoma. I loved her and will miss her always.
