  • Notes
    • My great grandfather, Elmer Thompson Davis was born on August 20, 1887, in Hancock, Pulaski County, Missouri. He was the seventh of nine children born of the Reverend John Starke Davis and Margaret Davis. Elmer was a miner at the time he married Mattie Howard on January 5, 1907 in Woolsey, Arkansas.

My grandmother Beulah once told me her father died as a result of a mining accident but had never discussed the details of that statement. It seems likely that Elmer's occupation may have contributed to his tuberculosis but that remains unknown.

Through the combined research of Carol Scribner and upon examination of records provided by the Wheeler funeral home on May 30, 2006, we discovered that Elmer passed away on July 5, 1935, at the Oklahoma State Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Clinton, Custer County, Oklahoma. The funeral record also states that his occupation was that of a cook and that he was buried in the Sallisaw City Cemetery in a pauper's grave for the sum of one hundred dollars.

We visited the Sallisaw City Cemetery, located in Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, on June 30th of 2006. To our knowledge, no members of our family had ever visited this cemetery. We found Elmer's grave which has been marked by a recently placed gravestone. That gravestone is also inscribed with his parents' names. A Civil War gravemarker inscribed with his father's name lies next to Elmer's grave.

The following obituary comes from an unidentified and undated newspaper clipping passed on to me from Elmer's daughter. Our family believes that this obituary was most likely placed in a local Sallisaw, Oklahoma newspaper.
