    • Lancaster newspaper clipping, unknown date:
"Clayton S. Eby, 102, dies at home in city
Clayton S. Eby, one hundred and two, ardent fan of the Phillies and an avid pinochle player, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday at his home, 555 S. Lime St.

Eby marked his 102nd birthday last Sept. 14. He spent most of his wife working with the Watt and Shand Department store, having started in 1884 and retiring after 61 years in 1945.

Asked for advice on how to live to a ripe old age, Eby gave a number of answers on his birthdays over the years. Here's one from birthday No. 100, when he received a plaque from the Pennsylvania Medical Society:

'The best way to live is to have a schedule. I've lived the last 20 years every day same as the last. Early to bed and late to rise--and of course having no worries helps quite a bit.'

      PINOCLE PLAYER
He was a great booster for the Phillies. He never missed watching them on TV, except on Saturdays when he had a couple of old buddies in for pinochile.

In recent years he smoked a pipe constantly. 'I smoke it from the time I get up at eight until I go to bed at 8:30 at night,' he said.

      OLDEST BUYER
He was a buyer for the woolen dress goods department at Watt and Shand, and recalled that he made his last buying trip to New York at 82. People there told him he was the oldest buyer coming there for a store.

When he returned, he was called into the office and told that he was to be retired. He asked, 'Gentlemen, do you expect me, a man of eighty-two, to go out and get another job?' He was told that he would not have to work anymore and could do what he liked. On his 102nd birthday, he commented that 'I hit my 80th year on the payroll at Watt and Shand's.'

Eby was the oldest living member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

He was born on a farm near Mount Joy on Sept. 17, 1862, son of Simon J. and Kate Lintner Eby. He attended Mount Joy High School. His wife, the former Annie Bowser, died in 1938. The couple's only child, a daughter died in 1935. Among Eby's survivors is a nephew."
