- Miles Alfred Abernathy, Jr., 90, of Wilmington passed away June 17, 2008. Born in Mooresville, NC, on February 19, 1918, he was raised in Davidson, NC, and later moved to Carolina Beach. He was a member of the Carolina Beach and Myrtle Grove Volunteer Fire Departments and was past Commander of the Cape Fear Power Squadron.
When he retired from NC Natural Gas, he moved to Holden Beach, where he was a member of Brunswick Islands Baptist Church. Miles was a resident of the Woods at Holly Tree for the past several years.
He is survived by his son, Michael "Mickey" Abernathy and wife, Barbara, of Wilmington; Keith Abernathy and wife, Donna, of Portsmouth, VA; grandchildren, Mike Abernathy, Jr. and wife, Kim, Alesia A. Sprenger and husband, Pete, all of Wilmington; Bryan Abernathy and wife, Deborah, of Arlington, VA; great-grandchildren, Miles and Demi Abernathy, Emily and Luke Sprenger; sister, Maxine "Rusty" Miller and husband, Eugene "Peanut" Miller of Mooresville, NC. Miles was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Clara T. Abernathy, in 2006.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at 10:00 AM in the Oleander Chapel of Coble Ward-Smith, officiated by Rev. Mark Teachey. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Ste 220, Raleigh, NC 27605-1351.
