Notes |
- This is the Ezra Eby that wrote the first book I read with all the Eby information in it.
--Source of information (15 June 2000): Dawn Quast ;
1889 - at present residing near the town of Berlin, followed teaching public schools for 20 years, and is now engaged in the printing business in Berlin.
Ezra seems to have inherited his grandfather's love of education and books, he received his teachers certificate in 1870. We presume he taught in the years immediately following. The records show that he graduated from the Berlin High School in 1877. He attained prominence in the field of education and journalism.
We do not have complete records of where he taught or if he taught continuously. He was, at the time of his death, in 1901, teaching in Erbsville. We also have records that he taught at the following schools: Natchez, Martins, and Bridgeport. His granddaughter reported that he taught at Suddaby School.
The pioneer Waterloo County families owe much to the late Ezra E. Eby for his history of Waterloo Township.
Ina was the only child living at home at the time of the 1901 census, save an adopted child Estella Clemmer, who is presumably a relative of Mary Ann Clemmer, Ezra's wife.
On a personal note, it is sad that so little information is available about this man's children and their families, as he spent so much of his time recording the family history of the Eby family in his several books. - Dawn Eby Quast

EBY - On the 30th of July, 1901, at Ebersole, Waterloo Co., Ont., from the effects of a paralytic stroke which came upon him about ten days before his death. He was the youngest surviving son of the late Bro. Isaac Eby of near Berlin, who died many years ago. Deceased was born August 9, 1850, and was married to Mary Ann Clemmer, who with three sons and one daughter survive him. One son preceded him. Deceased was for upwards of twenty years a teacher in the public schools and was well known throughout the country, the editor having been for several years a pupil of his. He was also for several years engaged in the publishing business and is the author of several works, one of which is an excellent biographical "History of Waterloo Township" in two volumes, published in 1895. His burial on the 2d of August, in the C. Eby graveyard, Berlin, was very largely attended. Funeral services by S.R. Knechtel in German and D.B. Sherk in English.
