Notes |
- Source of information (15 June 2000): Dawn Quast ;
1889 - lives at the "Two Bridges", South Ward, Berlin. He follows gardening in summer and butchering in winter. Five children, all at home yet and unmarried. HEF p. 36
According to Kim Eby, his ggrandson, this man was a "Charmer" or witch doctor.
By 1889, when the Biographical History of the Eby Family was published by his brother Ezra, Christian Eby was living at Two Bridges in the South Ward of Berlin, ON. His reputation as a market gardener, orchardist and herbalist was widely known, as was his skill as a faith-healer.
- While in Pennsylvania August 2008, I found the following in the Lancaster Historical Society's collections of Eby information:
A grandson of Bishop Benjamin Eby, Christian was living at Two Bridges, Berlin. This is now the corner of Mill and Ottawa Sts' in Kitchener, Ontario.
He was a market gardener, orchardist, herbalist and Charmer "Brauche" or faith healer. Peopla came for miles to buy his medications amd herbs to be "charmed" for their illnesses. The family has many letters from patients who lived as far away as Collingwood, Mildmay, Clifford, in Ontario, and the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, Canada; also Michigan and Ohio in the USA. Many of the letters were addressed to Dr. Christ Eby, Market Gardener.
Many stories of his prowess were told long after his death in 1920. He became something of a legend. These stories lost nothing in the telling. The one most frequently told was of several boys who invaded his orchard. He ordered them to stay up in the tree until morning - and the teller of the tale would say, "He wove a magic spell and they durst not come down."
He bought the homestead from his father and he had a family of eight children.
