    • Withers ? American Generations 1 ? 4

They spanned the years 1655 to 1863 in America

American Generation #1 --- This Withers generation was the bridge between the old and new countries --- William x52 Withers and brother John x51 Withers came to America in 1655. They came from a small village in North West England. I have seen it reported as Halton, Arkholme, Melling, Lancashire, or Lancaster, England.

Halton, Arkholme and Melling are all small civil parishes near the river Lune near the larger city of Lancaster. Lancashire is the county and is sometimes called the County of Lancaster and both names are correct. Its boundaries have changed over the years. This area is near Liverpool where the Beatles were formed in 1960.

In 1844, a great great grandson of William x52 (Martin 106 Withers) wrote a brief genealogical sketch of the Withers family and said of James 1 Withers that he was from Bristol, England. Bristol is about 214 miles south of the Halton/Arkholme areas. Bristol was one of the main ports that sent ships to America. It is not known if the Withers clan ever moved to Bristol, but it is possible that some of them traveled through that area on their way to America. After they arrived in America, the Withers probably did business with merchants from Bristol.

John x51 and William X52 were sons of William x39 Withers, a yeoman which in England denotes a class of small landowners forming the next grade below gentleman.

John x51 was perhaps the most successful in business of the two. He was the older by about 2 years and he became very wealthy as a landowner, ships owner and Captain. Although he was married to three different women, he had no sons to inherit his wealth. After his death, John?s daughter sold some of his property to Augustine Washington, the father of George Washington.

William x52 Withers settled in Stafford County, VA and had at least 2 sons. The older son, William x64 died fairly young and the other son was James 1 Withers as recorded in Recum's book "Withers -- America". William x52 died before James 1 was married and he did not get to see any of his grand children or get to know the large family he started in America.

American Generation #2 --- The start of the American family --- James 1 Withers may have been born in England, or he may have been born in America. I have seen papers proposing both of those theories, but we really do not know. James? father was in America before James was born, but William or his wife may have made a return trip to England. We have no evidence of that trip, but it?s possible.

We do know that James 1 went to live and work with Captain Edward Mountjoy in Stafford County, VA soon after his father, William x52 died. Captain Mountjoy?s brother, Thomas Mountjoy was a merchant in Bristol, England. Much later one of James? grand daughters married Captain Mountjoy?s grandson and then later another granddaughter married a great grandson of Captain Mountjoy.

James 1 married Elizabeth Keene when he was 20 years old. They settled on his fathers land on Potomac Creek in Stafford County, VA and had 16 children - 8 girls and 8 boys. They lived near Elizabeth?s parents. Of their large family, 5 of the boys and 6 of the girls survived to marry and have large families of their own.

James 1 and Elizabeth had at least 81 grand children ? many of which they got to see before they died. They acquired thousands of acres of land and much personal wealth.

Besides being an extensive landowner, James 1 Withers listed his occupation as ?Planter.? That was the word used to describe a Plantation owner. He also owned two grain mills, grew tobacco, had blacksmith tools and many skills. He also had fine horses and cattle.

James 1 taught his children to be business people and American patriots. He gave his sons large tracts of land on which they established their own plantations. He owned a Bible, believed in God and Jesus Christ was his Savior and Redeemer according to his will.

Today, we would consider that James 1 had at least one serious fault. He was involved in the slave trade, which was very common in that area at that time. He acquired at least 39 slaves that he used on his plantation and left them to his wife and sons in his will.

American Generation #3 --- These were the builders of the Withers American family in the Virginia counties of Stafford, Culpeper and Fauquier. The 5 Withers boys of this generation that survived had families and produced 49 children (26 boys and 23 girls) that carried the Withers name for Generation #4.

James 1 Withers? 6 girls that survived married boys from the Field, Allen, Hudnall, Mauzy and McDaniel families. At least 5 of them had families of their own.

John 7 Withers was the oldest son that survived and like his father had a large family. He married a girl from the Allen family and had 13 children ? 6 boys and 7 girls.

Then came James ?Old Nigh?10 Withers. He had a total of 8 children with two different wives ? one wife was from the Barbee family and they had 3 boys and 4 girls. The second wife was from the Garner family and they had 1 son.

Thomas 15 Withers was next and he had 12 children ? He married a girl from the Williams family and they had 7 boys and 5 girls.

Then came William 16 Withers who married a girl from the Hord family and they had 11 children ? 6 boys and 5 girls.

Keene 17 Withers was the youngest child and he married a girl from the Cave family and they had 5 children ? 2 girls and 3 boys.

It is believed that all of Withers American Generation #3 children lived and died in the VA counties of Stafford, Culpeper and Fauquier. Their lives spanned the years 1701 to 1804. It is believed that all were American Patriots. That part of Virginia supplied many of the leaders of our new country.

They built their families in number and wealth and added to the American family. They were well known in that part of Virginia as large landowners, mill owners, and plantation owners. Like their father, they grew tobacco, cattle, and horses. Also like their father, most owned slaves.

American Generation #4 --- This generation spanned the period from 1715 to 1863. It was the generation that supplied at least 13 soldiers for the War of the Revolution. At least 17 members of the generation moved out of Virginia to Kentucky, 1 to North Carolina and 1 to Tennessee to help build those states.

There were at least 81 descendants (children of Generation #3) in this Generation 4. They in turn produced at least 235 children to Generation #5 and at least 169 of those children had the last name of Withers.

The first Withers descendant born in Generation #4 was Daniel 2 Field born in 1715. The first born named Withers of this generation was James 18 Withers. He was born in 1736.

The last Withers born and the last Withers to die of this generation was George Washington 38 Withers. He was born during the War of the Revolution in 1777 and he passed away during the Civil War in 1863.

Twenty of the Withers girls of this generation married boys from the following families and most had children with their names; Ball, Barbee, Chinn, DeJarnette, Duncan, Garner, Jennings, Mauzy, McKay, Mountjoy, Pickett, Porter, Routt, Scanlon, Smith, Waller, West, and Winn.
