    • From Phil Mullen 04/2013:

Eugene Isadore Hord (1843-1922), 13th Regiment Ohio, Company A (doe: 10/1/1862):
Eugene Isadore Hord was the oldest son Andrew Jackson Hord and the oldest brother of Luzern D Hord. He was born in Dublin, Ohio on October 3, 1843. A descendant, Deborah Hord Elsasser, discovered and filed an extensive military record for Eugene. After enlisting in the Union Army his unit headed south into Kentucky and Tennessee. On December 24, 1862, he contracted the measles and was admitted to the hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where he remained until November 30, 1863 almost a full year. Apparently, the measles had seriously infected and weakened his lungs. Around the time Eugene left the hospital and rejoined his unit some confusion in his military records caused him to be erroneously declared a deserter for several months. After this error was corrected he was reunited with his unit in Knoxville, Tennessee where he was hospitalized again for a short while on April 2, 1864. In a pension affidavit filed on behalf of Eugene after the War, a comrade who served with him wrote that Eugene ....was always with a cough and weak lungs and was wholly unfit for duty all the time until he was mustered out. From Knoxville his unit fought its way into Georgia and by mid 1864 was assigned to General William Sherman's Army. Eugene was transferred from company F to A about this time. His unit engaged in numerous battles in Georgia including Chicamauga, Dalton, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Love Joy and Atlanta. Instead of joining Sherman's ?March to the Sea? after the Battle of Atlanta, the 13th Regiment Ohio fought its way through northern Georgia back to Tennessee where it engaged in the Battle of Nashville in December of 1864. Afterward, the 13th Regiment Ohio spent time in Huntsville, Alabama and again in Nashville before it was sent to New Orleans in early 1865. There, Eugene was charged with being absent without leave and spent some time in the brig. Eventually, his unit went on to San Antonio, Texas where he was honorably mustered out in October,1865; he then returned to his family in Ohio.

Two years later in 1867 Eugene married Victoria Martin. After the birth of their first child they moved with his family from Ohio to Shelbyville, Illinois where he farmed with his father.

Victoria died on March 9, 1871; one week earlier her second son died at the age of two, the cause of their deaths are unknown but was likely the flu. Victoria probably also suffered from a broken heart. Afterward, Eugene moved back to Marion, Ohio and on February 25, 1873 he married Onnoria E Baer. Together they had four children including twin daughters. In 1881 they moved to a farm in Buck Township, Hardin County, Ohio. He died in Kenton, Ohio on June 10, 1922, a few months before his 79 birthday.
