  • Notes
    • When Lisa Hord suddenly found herself a single parent with three small children - a 7-year-old and 6-year-old twins - to care for, she relied on something her husband, Monte, had said years before.

"My husband always told me that I was strong enough to take care of the kids if something happened to him. He married me because I was strong and capable of doing that," she said. "I hear those words every day and I have for the last 10 years."

Those 10 years have been difficult. As a resident of Pelham, which suffered heavily on 9/11, she and her children were "well-supported" by the community. She's grateful for that, but was uncomfortable with the attention. She tried to shield her children from the spotlight.

On anniversaries of the attacks, Hord and her children would head north to a quiet lake in Maine and paddle kayaks and canoes.

This year, she has decided to attend the ceremony in lower Manhattan, in search of closure.

She said she considers herself lucky: She was recently engaged to a wonderful man and she's the mother to three great kids.

"My husband believed in the golden rule. My kids got that from him. As young as they were, they did carry that message from him," she said. "I was blessed to have had him in my life."
