      1912-1999

      INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Leroy Deatherage, 86, Independence, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at a health-care center in Independence. Mr. Deatherage worked for the Wire Rope Corporation of America Inc. in St. Joseph for seven years. Then he was a plumber through the Plumbers Union No. 8 in Independence from 1946 until retiring three years ago. Born in Agency, Mo., on March 29, 1912, he lived in St. Joseph until moving to Independence in 1940.
      During World War II, Mr. Deatherage served in the Navy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Plumbers Union Local No. 8, both of Independence. On May 6, 1934, he married Faye Modrell in St. Joseph. She survives of the home in Independence. Mr. Deatherage was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Mattie; and a brother, Donald. Additional survivors: a son, Carl, Westwood, Kan.; a daughter, Sherry Morrison, Independence; a brother, Eugene, Odessa, Mo.; two sisters, Bernice King, Pennsylvania, and Louise Vale, Florida; and two grandchildren. The funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 15, at the George Carson and Sons Funeral Home, Independence. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
