  • Notes
    • Rozelle Abernathy shows him m. to Pattie, dau of "Old David", long known as Widow Pattie of the Bissell place. Children Joshua (to Missouri), James, and Nancy (Mrs John Capps).
Birth years vary: 1768 (1 ancestry.com entry), or 1770 (6 ancestry.com database entries), Brian Abernathy has birth for David as 29 May 1726.

      Ancestry.com databases for children:
Christine Pullman gives birth for Joshua as abt 1790 in NC, also lists James and Nancy.
Ron Stanford has descendency for Nancy, gives birth for all 3 children as 1790. Children of David ABERNATHY and Patty ABERNATHY: Joshua ABERNATHY b ABT 1790; James ABERNATHY born ABT 1790, married Murat YOUNG; Nancy ABERNATHY was born 1790. She married John CAPPS 2 DEC 1811. Children of Nancy ABERNATHY and John CAPPS are: Caleb CAPPS, Hiram CAPPS, Margaret CAPPS, Patty CAPPS.
Dwayne Gabriel has marriage of daughter Nancy in Mecklenburg Co, NC on 2 Dec 1811 and lists children as Caleb, Hirma, Margret, Patty and Franklin, with descendancy for Franklin Capps. Franklin Capps married Esther Fite 10 JUN 1833 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Child of Franklin Capps and Esther Fite is: Christopher Columbus Capps. Child of Christopher Columbus Capps is: Alonzo Capps.
      Brian Abernathy adds nothing new
      Jack Auble adds nothing new
Sharyn Young identifies Patty as Martha, with Patty as diminutive name used by family, adds Franklin Capps to Nancy's children and notes his marriage to Esther Fite on 10 Jun 1833 in Lincoln Co. NC. Postem: Linda Mink rlmink@ctcweb.net 2001-12-04 15:08:56 Chrisopher Columbus "Lum" Capps md Mary Ellen Beaver b.11/27/1839. (taken from marriage bond)
This pushes dates, if he was b. 1833.
    • It has been claimed by some descendants that his wife was named Christina Frances Forney, a dau of Jacob Forney and Mariah Bergner. The third-hand evidence offered, when compared with historical references and known data concerning that Christina Forney, makes this exceedingly unlikely. This David was several years deceased when Jacob Forney made his will, wherein he made it quite clear that his daughter Christina and her husband David Abernathy were both still allive at that time.

I have nothing but unsupported hearsay regarding his wife's names, even the given names. If her maiden name truly _was_ Forney, then it she may be a possible daughter of William Forney, a Revolutionary Patriot from the Salisbury District, of NC. Her name was probably simply Frances, as it would be a rare coincidence for there to be two different David Abernathys married to two different Christina Forneys, all in the same general area.

It is also possible that, as a widow, she was listed on Lincoln County Census prior to the family migration to Missouri. Analysis of available data suggests that one or more of the children (Grief, several daughters) may have remained in North Carolina when the rest of the family migrated to Missouri, settling near Longtown, in Cape Girardeau County. This event may have occurred very shortly after the marriage of daughter Sarah, but was certainly prior to 1830. More work is needed to trace the disposition of David's estate after his death in 1795/6 and to discover where his widow may be buried.
