  • Notes
    • From "The Trunk of an Elmore Family Tree" by William Elmore.

It is believed that all of John & Mary's children were born in either Lunenburg Co. VA or neighboring Brunswick Co. After the death of John's father in 1738, the whole Elmore family, headed by John's grandmother Rebecca, moved from New Kent Co. to neighboring Henrico Co. VA. The family settled on land bordering the Chickamominy River John, still a young boy, was among the family members who removed to these new lands and it was here that John grew into manhood.

During the early years of the Revolutionary War, John and his family migrated to Orange Co. NC. In the 1779 tax list for that county the names of both John Elmore and his son John appear.
    • In 1765 William Martin Jr. bought 92 acres on the North side of Middle Cedar Creek from John Elmore, "...along William Martin's line & County Line." (this appears to be the same land he purchased in 1759 from Robert Moore Sr.) Wit: Robert Moore, Valentine Moore, Philemon Lacy.

Children of John and Mary Elmore are:

      Peter5 Elmore, born August 01, 1747.

    • From Geni.com, Aaron Michael Smith:

John Elmore (ACCA), son of Peter Elmore, was born in New Kent County, Virginia. His birth as recorded in the parish register states:1 John son of peter Elmore born Janry 22d 1724/5 The wife of John was Mary (Unknown).2 It is not known, however, if John had only one wife or if Mary was the mother of his children. The children of John included:3 ...THE TRUNK OF AN ELMORE TREE by William E. Elmore, 122 Beaujolais Drive, Florissant, MO 63031, 1992, p. 51 ff: ACCA. JOHN ELMORE John Elmore (ACCA), son of Peter Elmore, was born in New Kent County, Virginia. His Birth as recorded in the parish register states:1 John son of Peter Elmore born Janry 22d 1724/5

The wife of John was Mary (Unknown).2 It is not known, however, if John had only one wife or if Mary was the mother of his children. The children of John included:3 John Elmore (ACCAA), a son born circa 1753; more later. Peter Elmore (ACCAB), a son, born 1 August 1747; more later. Randolph Elmore (ACCAC), a son borrn circa 1750; more later. James Elmore (ACCAD), a son born circa 1756. William Elmore (ACCAE), a son born 4 February 1759; more later.4

It is believed that all of John's children were born in either Lunenburg County, Virginia or in neighboring Brunswick County.

After the death of John's father in 1738, the whole Elmore family, headed by John's grandmother Rebecca, moved from New Kent County to neighboring Henrico County, Virginia. The family settled on land bordoring the Chickahominy River. John, still a young boy, was among the family members who removed to these new lands and it was here that John grew into manhood.

In her will dated 1744, Rebecca mentions her grandson John:5

"...I give to my daughter Elisabeth Elmore the other half of my land including the plantation whereon I now live to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and if she dy without such heir then to my granson John Elmore son of Peter Elmore to him and his lawful heirs forever."

By 1756 this land belonged to John Elmore, Elizabeth (ACE) apparently having died without issue. This land may or may noy have been sold to John's uncle Thomas Elmore (ACA) on 10 November 1756.6 Apparently this indenture was not finalized although it was recorded because twelve days later the same land was sold to Isham Allen as indicated by the following indenture:7

"This Indenture made the Twenty Second Day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred and fifty six Between John Elmore of the County of Luningburg of the one Part and Isham Allen of the Parish & County of Henrico of the Other Part- Witnesseth that the same John Elmore for the Consideration of the sum of Fifteen Pounds Current Money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Isham Allen the Receipt Where of he doth hereby acknowledge Himself fully Sattisfied Contented and paid have given granted Bargained Sold Aliend infeoffed and confirmd and by these presents do give grant bargain sell alien enfoeff and Confirm unto the Sd Isham Allen his heirs and assigns forever One Certain Tract or Parcell of Land Containing one hundred & thirty Seven acres & a half of Land Lying and being on the south side of Chickahiminy River in the County of Henrico it being a Parcell of Land Devised to the said John Elmore by the Will of his grandmother Rebeckah Elmore and is bounded by the Lands of Edmund Allen & Joseph Watson Dec'd With all the Right Titlt Properly Possessions Inheritance Claim and Demand Whatsoever of him the said John Elmore ....[?] or to the same or to any Part thereof, With all the Houses Orchards Fenses and all other Improvements to the sd. "Signed Sealed & Delivered in the Presants of Julius Allin, James Allin, Mary Allin at a Court held for Henrico County the 6 day December 1756 This Bond from John Elmore to Isham Allin was brought into court & proved by the oath of the Witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded Test Thomas Adams, county clerk"

This indenture was finalized and subsequent entries in reconstructed records of Henrico County refer to the sale of this land to Isham Allen by John Elmore. Of note in these records is the reference to "John Elmore of Luningsburge County." Also of interest are the names of the witnwssws to these indentures.

Lydall Bacon, one of the witnesses to the indenture, had been a resident of= Henrico County before moving to Lunenburg County where, in 1746, he purchased 297 acres of land from Young Stokes. He became a prominent citizen of Lunenburg and died there in 1775. Lydall, born 1717, was the son of John Bacon who, together with Thomas Elmore (AA), Peter Elmore (AC), and a James Austin, was directed to help improve the road construction to the mill of Charles Fleming in New Kent County. The Bacons and the Elmores, therefore, were neighbors for at least three generation and through three counties. The Bacon family was also related by marriage to the Edloe family. Edmund Bacon, brother to Lyddall, married Elizabeth Edloe the daughter of John Edloe. The Edl;oes also had property interests in Lunenburg County.

Another person of note among the witnesses to the indenture of John Elmore to Isham Allen was John Blackwell. Blackwell was the brother of Robert Blackwell of Lunenburg County, a constable of Lunenburg County at the time the indenture was signed and, as seen by subsequent events, a close friend of John Elmore. Before he moved to lunenburg County, John Elmore was witness to a land transfer in Henrico County. In abstract form this transfer is noted:8

"Edmund and Mary Allen deed to Matthew Johnson for natural love, etc. 50 acres in Henrico situated upon the north side of the great branch joining the lands of Jos. Watsan [Watson] and Volontine [Vanentine] Freeman. Witnesses: Jno. Elmore, Littlebery Allen. June 4, 1748."

Edmund Allen had property adjoining John Elmore and Joseph Watson. Watson, a close friend, may have been a descendant of the Theophilius Watson who witnessed the will of William Whitby that anmed the family of Thomas Elmore (A). Theophilius Watson later appeared in the 1704 Quit Rents of New Kent County along with Thomas Elmore (A) and his sons Thomas (AA) and Peter (AC). Witnessing the land transfer of Edmund Allen was among the last acts John Elmore performed while residing in Henrico County. The following year he was found among the residents of Lunenburg County.

In the 1749 tithe list of Hugh Lawson for Lunenburg County is the name "John Elmoor."9 Lawson's list was for the residents of the northeastern section of the county and was bordered, in part, by the Nottoway River and the Brunswick County line. John was listed as having only one tithe, namely himself. A tithe was any male, white or black, who was sixteen years of age or greater.

His tithe payment was "six heads and scalps" as was usual in Lunenburg at that time for new residents without property. This gruesome sounding tithe refered to the heads and scalps of wolves that menaced the domestic animals of the region and were considered a general nuisance. Most of these wolves were captured in pits that dotted the area. So successful were the early settlers that within a short time wolves ceased to be the nuisance that caused the levying of the tithe. Today these wolves, which were smaller and more brown in color than the more northern timber wolves, have vanished from Lunenburg and today are an endangered species.

The entry for John Elmore in the list of Hugh Lawson is next to that of "Phillip Edlow's quarter" while John Edloe was listed only three names removed. Also in the list of Hugh Lawson was John Blackwell.

John Elmore's name appeared again in the 1750 and 1752 tithe lists of Lunenburg County. As noted above, John sold the property he inherited from his grandmother in 1756. John Blackwell, one of the witnesses to this land sale, was, according to the tithe lists, the constable of Lunenburg County during the years 1751 and 1752. During the December 1756 court sesssion, John Elmore succeeded Stephen Wood as Constable; Wood was appointed constable only the previous June.10 The position of constable ranked just below that of sheriff which was the highest position of county authority in colonial Virginia.

John moved across the Lunenburg/Brunswick County line sometime after the above date because in 1764 we find him selling his property on the border between the counties and moving back into Lunenburg County. An abstract of this sale in Brunswick County follows:11

"Elmore to Martain for L20 current Virginia Currency an estimated 92 acres bounding William Martains property. Lying in Brunswick County on the north side of Midle Ceder Creek and bounded as followeth: Beginning at a corner white oak on the north side of Midle Ceder Creek from thence along William Martains line to a corner white oak on the county line from thence along the county line to a corner poplar on a branch from thence down the said branch to Midle Ceder Creek from thence down the said creek to the beginning. 7 September 1764.

A few months after the Brunswick County sale, John bought property in Lunenburg County. On 13 February 1765 John Elmore "of Brunswick County" bought the land of John Broughton for L20 - the same amopunt he received for his Brunswick land. Witnesses to the purchase were Daniel Tweatt, James Elmore, and Athanasius Elmore.12

The first remention of John in the published tithes of Lunenburg County is in 1772 when John is on the list of Charles Hamlin and is noted as having two other tithes besides himself; one of these tithes is listed as Randolph; the other is believed to have been son Peter. John appears in the tithes for the years 1774, 1775, and 1776 as living in the Quarter of Benjamin Bridgeforth and he is noted as having six tithes. (A "Quarter" denoted an absentee land owner.) These tithes are believed to have been John and his five sons as mentioned above.13

On 14 April 1774 John (now noted as John Elmore Sr.) made a deed of trust for L50 using the same approximate 200 acres of land he had purchased from John Broughton nine years earlier. The deed of trust was made with his old friend Robert Blackwell. John and Robert were noted as "both of Lunenburg County."14

During the early years of the Revolutionary War John and his family migrated to Orange County, North Carolina. In the 1779 tax list for that county the names of both John Elmore and his son John (ACCAA) appear. They are noted to have a worth of L400, which at the time was the equivalent of Approximately $500 in American money. John continued to appear in the Orange County tax lists for several years. In 1780 he is noted to have taxable property worth of L125.15 In 1781 his taxable property was worth L100.16 In 1872 John Elmore Senior was noted as having 100 acres, 1 mule and 3 cattle with a taxable worth of L35.17

In 1783 he is noted as having 2 horses or mules and 2 cattle with a taxable worth of L24.18 In 1785 tax records he is noted as having 50 acres and 1 poll;19 later in the same tax record a separate entry next to the name of John Elmore Senior states "Delinquint" with a line drawn through the entry. 20 The name of John Elmore Senior disappears from subsequent tax records and it is believed that John died about this date.
