Typically, a windlass consists of a horizontal cylinder (barrel), which is rotated by the turn of a crank or belt.   William's parents are Robert Abernathy and Ann Nance and can be found in the Robert Abernathy and Sarah Cubish line. Could he be the William in Jefferson County AL in 1840? It's not an exact match, but there is no William on the Mississippi Census for 1840. Ukn Twps, p. 205, Abernathy, William: 0010001-0120001-0-0 William and his family moved into Jefferson Co, Alabama about 1816-1819. He was given a patent of land there, by order of Pres Andrew Jackson. He later moved to Pontotoc Co Mississippi abt 1836-1841. Both Wm and Sarah are bur on a family cemetery plot on the original family farm 6 m. south of Pontotoc. The old home and part of the original farm owned by Ollie Johnson, grandson, in 1973. IGI Submittals, Btc 1760834 has another dau, Margaret, b. 1839. Sharyn Young's online database adds another son, Julian Rocket Abernathy. But Gatewood does not list that child or Margaret.
