January 11 1865
Camp Near Petersburg Va. " Dear Brother. It is threw the kind hand of Providence I am bless with the opportunity of dropping you a few lines to let you no that I am well as comon. Truly hoping this note will find you all well and hearty. N. B. I want to see you all very bad and I can inform you that I recieved your very kind letter dated the 5th of Sept. which gave me much satisfaction to (hear) from all, ya must excuse me for not writing to you sooner for I have bin at the hospital parte of the tim and had a ball cut out of my hand it was lodged against the bones in the back of my haind. It nearly made me twist my tale when the doctors was cutting it out but it is nearly healed up. I can sorty rit that is all that I do. I don't do any duty at all. I haint done any since I came back nor shut my hand no never Expect to again. I think this cussed war will end soon and in the way I have though all the time. N. B. the time is heard here and I want you to send me nother ham bone. Please help Phoebe to fickes me another and send it to me for I don't get only half enough to eat. Rit soon and often.
