Notes |
- Sidney was an afterthought! He was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, according to his enlistment papers. Ten years younger than his next sibling. He was only 14 when his mother died. His only brother was 12 years his senior.
Note: See images of three seperate military records in a seperate file. He enlisted in the US Army as a volunteer in 1861, at the age of 16, at Harrisburg, PA. When Sidney Jadiah Pier joined Company K, Pennsylvania's 16th Cavalry at age 18, and went to war, it was already near its end. He joined in Waterford, Erie County, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1863. It says "Volunteered as recruit for the 16th Pa Cav" on the face of his enlistment paper. He was six feet tall, with blue eyes, light hair and complexion, occupation farmer, and he gave as next of kin "Mrs. S.E. Pier, Cassewago, Crawford Co, Pa". His brother Seldon's wife, Alvina. What happened to Seldon? Was he already at war? Lois had been dead for four years, but it seems curious that Sidney never named his father, who was then 62, as next of kin.
While out on a foraging expedition after the Battle of the Wilderness, he was shot by a bushwacker. He had a sack of corn before him and one behind. The bullet that struck him was a 45 caliber and struck him in the right brest, passing through the right lung, and tearing the point of the right sholder blade. He fell back on the sack of corn and the horse ran two miles before he was taken off. His injuries were enough to 'render him thereby unfit to perform to a great extent manual labor" and he was honorably discharged and given a pension of $14.00 per month.
Sidney Jadiah was hospitalized for most of his enlistment. He became ill with "remittent fever" and was hospitalized near Washington, D.C., was released to duty briefly, and returned to hospital wounded. No indication of the nature of the wound. He was mustered out August 11, 1865.
Sidney's Civil War rifle turned up in the twentieth century, in Washington State in the hands of his son, David Clarence Alamando Pier, according to Daisy Belle Catherine Brown Pier, David's wife, in her book Wagon Wheels A-Rollin' She refers to it as a "musket."
Sidney J. Pier married Emma F. Pier on Sept. 6, 1865. Her antecedents are not known. She was born August 22, 1844, and died in Irvington, Kossuth County, Iowa on November 18, 1874. Her last three children were born there. Sidney later married Dorothea C. Buckholz, and ended his days in Lewis County, Washington (where he homesteaded) on April 6,1906, at age 51.
Sidney was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Claquato, (Iowa?).
