  • Notes
    • Emily N. Eby

Emily N. Eby died on March 13, 2010, just 17 days short of her 109th birthday, at Moravian Manor in Lititz, PA. Emily was born in Mt. Joy, PA, the middle child of Harry S. Newcomer and Ella Viola Strickler Newcomer. She was graduated from Mt. Joy High School and Goucher College, Class of 1924. She was employed as a china buyer at Hutzler Brothers' department store in Baltimore before marrying Henry R. Eby in 1926. She spent her married life in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA, where her husband was the Allegheny County Agricultural Extension Agent.

Emily was always active in volunteer and service organizations. In the late 1930's, she served as president of the South Hills College Club. During World War II, she was the Chairman of Home Service Volunteers for the Pittsburgh American Red Cross. She also worked in Henry's office, testing soil samples for the many victory gardeners who raised and canned fruits and vegetables during the war years.

Moving to Moravian Manor in 1983, she continued her volunteering, serving as the representative of residents on the board of trustees and on the design committee for the Steinman Hall addition to Moravian Manor.

Emily was always an avid correspondent, keeping in contact with a myriad of friends and relatives. In order to stay in touch with the younger generations, she learned to use email at the age of 97.

Emily is survived by a son, Robert, and his wife, Connie, of Pittsboro, NC; two grandchildren, Sue Eby of New York City and Tom Eby of San Francisco; three great grandchildren and a sister, Virginia Newcomer Lane, of Media, PA.

A memorial service will be held at Moravian Manor in Lititz at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Emily Eby Scholarship Fund at Goucher College (1021 Dulaney Valley Rd., Baltimore, MD 21204-2794) or to Moravian Manor (300 West Lemon Street, Lititz, PA 17543).

Nissley Funeral Home, Mount Joy in charge of arrangements, 653-1151.
