Seldon acquired for himself a formal education. he taught school in his early years then was a school principal in a San Francisco school for many years until his retirement. he was a charter member in a Christian Church on Noya Street in San Francisco and some of the older members still remember him well.

As a youth he served in the Civil War. He kept up his G.A.R. membership and went to their annual national encampments as one of its few remaining members when he was a very elderly man. He lived to the age of ninety-three. He and his wife, Helen, had five children, two of them sons. His younger daughter, Eleanor, was living in a guest house for the elderly in Santa Cruz, California.

Loyal remembered him looking like Colonel Sanders - very dignified. His grandson committed suicide by leaping from a multi-storied building in Berkeley."

Note: Mila Bernethy: Melanie Hawkins found the newpaper article about the above mentioned suicide. This was not Selden's grandson but his son Edward. See info on Edward for the article.
    • From Jeff Sturges 07/2012

For a number of years until his death in 1940 my great Uncle Selden participated in Memorial Day ceremonies at the Presidio of San Francisco. He was a Union veteran having served as a Private during the last year of the war with the 47th Illinois Infantry. As he advanced in age, he became one of the last few surviving Union veterans in San Francisco and was called upon to recite Lincoln?s Gettysburg address. According to a 1937 clipping from the San Francisco Examiner he did this in ?a sonorous voice?. This and other clippings show him in his blue uniform. Since he was mustered in during March 1865 and mustered out in January 1866, he likely did not see much action, however, according to the regimental history, his unit was in Montgomery and Selma, Alabama after the fall of Mobile. After the war, he came to San Francisco in 1875 having obtained his teaching credential at North Missouri Normal School and Commercial College (now known as Truman State). He taught mathematics for 52 years and was an active member of the First Christian Church for many years. Although he was proud of these accomplishments, I think he was most proud of his Union service. His gravestone is simply inscribed with his name, dates of birth and death and ?Pvt. 47 Ill. Inf?
