    Steamship built in 1873 by Caird & Co., Greenock, Scotland for the Norddeutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd). 3,265 tons, length 350 ft. x 40.3 ft. beam, straight stem, 1 funnel, 2 masts, iron construction, single screw propulsion, compound engines. Service speed of 13 knots. Accommodations: 90 passengers in 1st class, 126 in 2nd class, and 650 in 3rd class (steerage). Crew: 103. Launched December 1873. Maiden Voyage: May 23, 1874: Bremen - Southampton - New York. Last Voyage: April 26, 1885: Bremen - Southampton - New York. Rebuilt in 1886 for the Imperial German Mail steamer Service to the Far East. New engines, high-pressure boilers, and reconfigured passenger accommodations. May 30, 1887: wrecked in a storm on the southeastern rock outcrop of Socotra Island, Indian Ocean. 4 lives lost.

    • I see his parents Peter and Sophia in the 1880 census, which would be the first census they were in since coming to America. With the parents are John 12 and Jacob 2. Ludwig is not with them so I can only assume, since he was born between John and Jacob, that he died as a young lad shortly after arriving in the US.
