  • Notes
    • From the Eby Bed and Breakfast in Gordonville, Pennsylvania:

In 1880, John Eby, the youngest of Sem's 11 children, bought the farm from Jacob Frantz Sr for $11,000. Sem married Jacob's daughter Anna. The farm then contained 67 acres. During the 31 years he owned it, he bought two neighboring farms and added 13 acres, making it 80, which it still is today. In 1921, Ira Eby bought the farm for $18,000. He owned it until 1948, when Clair Eby bought it for $25,000. He owned it until 1976. I started farming in 1967 and built the new 52 stall dairy barn in 1972. Joyce and I opened our home to overnight guests in 1970, so families could experience life on the farm. After 32 years of farming, we moved across the field to a new home. We continue to enjoy guests here as well. Our son, Michael, took over the farm in 1999. Mike and Lynette Eby became the sixth generation to farm the land. The farm has been in the family for 184 years and in the Eby name 150 years. Mike and Lynette feel this is a privilege from the Lord to be able to continue the wonderful and fulfilling life on the farm. They are thrilled to have the opportunity to share their life on the farm with you. They've entertained people from across the United States and many foreign countries. They hope you will enjoy your stay with them and get a taste of the rewards farm life brings.

    • Paradise Mennonite Church (Paradise, Pennsylvania, USA)Paradise Mennonite Church (Mennonite Church), a member of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, located in Paradise, Lancaster County, PA, built its first meetinghouse in 1806 on land contributed by David Witmer, the innkeeper. By popular subscription $828 was collected for the building. Forty years later it was replaced by a larger brick church. In 1885 the third church, 45 x 65 ft., also of brick, was built and in 1909 considerably enlarged. The first Sunday school was held in 1887. This was the center of the missionary movement among Lancaster Conference Mennonites, giving J. A. Ressler, A. Hershey Leaman, Mary Denlinger, John H. Mellinger, and John M. Kreider early to the cause. The sewing circle movement started here in 1895 and Mary Mellinger in 1911 became its first conference-wide chairman. The cutting room of the Associated Sewing Circles is near by. A beautiful cemetery is on the hill overlooking Paradise. The church membership in 1958 was 302, with Clair B. Eby as bishop, and Amos W. Weaver and Willis E. King as ministers.
