William was the forth child of Thomas and Elizabeth Adams.
He went west in a covered wagon in 1868 with his parents to Washington County, Kansas where they homesteaded. He walked some two miles to school and did work on the farm. Later he worked for neighbors saving enough mony to buy horses and farm equipment to start farming. At the age of 21 he had won the heart and hand of Malinda J. Mason, the daughter of nearby neighbors.
During their early married life they farmed for two years, then moved to Chakalus,(Chehalis?) Washington in 1890. After five years they returned to Washington County, Kansas. He then engaged in various operations, such as horse trading and buying and selling stock. He operated a thrashing machine and corn sheller. In 1898 they moved to Udall, Kansas, where he owned and operated a stone quarry. Then in 1905 they moved to Fort Cobb, Oklahoma where he engaged in auctioneering, and for 20 years he was one of the outstanding auctioneers of Oklahoma. His nature was such that he always wanted to be of service to others. A merchant at Albert, Oklahoma had just put down a well and wanted to dynamite the bottom to increase the flow of water, so he called on Bill to help. The charge exploded prematurely and Bill lost his left arm and left eye. His health was so impaired that he had to give up his line of profession. They then moved to Neodesha, Kansas where they remained.
