Benjamin and Catherine Eby were married in Ohio. Their first child was born there, probably in Bowling Green,Wood county. She was born in Feb. 1853 and lived one day. Then their second child Olive was born in Tama county, Iowa on December 21,1854. They settled in an area of the county just east of the present town of Garwin.
Family folklore says that when the community wanted to name the town there was some discussion and it was decided that the men should have a foot race and the winner would give the town a name. The race was run and won----a tie by two men. Their names are not known to the author, however one began with the letter G and the other with the letter R. It was decided to put them together and the result was G and R win. Making the name GARWIN.
The Freets lived in a log cabin for many years and they raised their family there. Benjamin and Catherine had ten children, nine of which were born in this part of Iowa. Their first born died before they came and later two more children would not reach adulthood. Finley lived less than 9 years and Natalie, their youngest child passed at the age of three.
Our Ancestor Benjamin Alpha lived to within days of his 85th birthday. And he lived all of his years in and around Garwin. In his later years he would spend extended periods with his daughter Thelma who lived in the St. Louis, MO area. - Nora Yahl

Benjamin Freet died at his home in this place Saturday morning after a lingering illness of more than a year, aged 66 year, 7 months and 7 days. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Odenweller, of Whitten, in the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the interment was in Crystal cemetery. The service was largely attended the church being packed and many unable to gain admission at all.
The deceased was born in Maryland married in 1851 and in 1854 came to this state. He was the father of 10 children, 7 of whom, 3 sons and 4 daughters with the wife and mother, survive to mourn his departure. Mr. Freet was among our earliest settlers and had a large circle of friends who join in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
