Notes for JOHN URIAL BROUGHTON:
Ref: "Landed Gentry of American Families," p. 2582
Data on the Urials 1st marriage to Oral Barber is from the Urial Broughton Family Bible, now (1972) in possession of Harry Broughton, 6279 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C., Canada. Birth Dates of both parents and their marriage are recorded in that book. The circumstances of his second, apparently bigamous marriage are not known. After his disappearance from Delaware county records, he next appears December 11th, 1832 when, as husband of widow Naomi (Rowley) York, he is appointed administrator of the estate of the late Asahel York. (Ref: Steuben County Probate Records) His prior marriage to Oral Barber was not known to his second wife Naomi, until several years after they were married. Apparently when he applied for his second bounty land Warrant, he had to get confirmation of his service from Delaware county. The county Judge who issued the confirmation of service in Delaware county was father-in-law of a daughter of his first marriage. Family tradition in Steuben county recou!
nts that Urial divorced his first wife in Pennsylvania for adultery. This is rather doubtful as he shows up already married for the second time, only sixteen months after the birth of his seventh child from his first marriage in Delaware county, and that he chose to keep his prior marriage a secret until forced to admit it.
Urial served in the War of 1812, from September 8th to December 8th, 1814. He enlisted at Delhi, Delaware county, NY as a private in Capt. Parker's Company of Col. Farrington's regiment of Delaware county Militia. On March 22nd, 1851, in Delaware county, he applied for bounty land on that service, and Warrant #43490 for 40 acres of land was issued to him under the Act of September 28th, 1850. At that time, he was a resident of Jasper, NY. He applied April 9th, 1855 for additional bounty land, and Warrant #45045 for 120 acres was issued to him under the Act of March 3rd, 1855.
John Urials headstone says 9 days, 11 months, 77 years. This is only evident with a rubbing, as his headstone is quite weathered. Cemetary records ay that he was born in Westminiater, CT
Adopted the two York children.
Cemerery records say he was born at Westminister, CT
