Notes for JOHN I BROUGHTON:
Alternate birth date of 16 Jun 1717.
This John would seem to be the man who, according to tradition of descendants, married his second wife, Anna Ainsworth, removed to Poultney-Wells VT, and was the progenitor of a large family group.
This John may have been the start of the Wauconda, Lake Co., IL Lyle & Earl Broughtons.
Ref: Conn. Historical Society Collection. (French and Indian War Rolls 1758-1762, Vol. X, p. 255).
John Brouton, entered April 10, discharged Dec. 3, on payroll of Capt. John Spalding's Company (12'th) of the 1'st Reg. of Conn. Troops Commanded by Gen. Lyman, 1761
John Broughton (1717-77) responded to the Lexington Alarm as a private in Capt. Joseph Palmer's company from Voluntown, CT.
With reference to "Wells, Vermont 200 years" by GEthnic Background E. Pember Wood, 1955, and "A History of the Town of Poultney Vermont..." by J. Joslin, B. Frisbie and F. Ruggles, 1875. Both texts are erroneous. Concerning Joslin's text: there is no evidence that the parents of John Broughton Jr. ever came to Wells. The other two reported brothers (Samuel & Michael) are, by convincing circumstantial evidence brothers of the Wells John. No record has been found that any John Broughton was killed in the Revolution. The DAR no longer accepts Joslin's book as a reference. Concerning Wells, Vermont, 200 Years, it is basically a copy of Joslin's Work.
Lanphere genealogy says that John and Anne divorced shortly after marrying.
There is some indication that this John was wounded during the war, and died from his woonds shortly after dischage in Voluntown, New London Co., CT, and is buried there. Anna went to Clarendon, Rutland Co., VT in 1778 with her Son John and his wife Lucy Perkins, and her other children. Need to check the unpublished Revolutionary War records at the CT State library in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. Other sources said that John traveled to Rutland County Vermont, and died there shortly after arrival.
- He died at his home in Voluntown, New London County, Connecticut
