Notes for MICHAEL I BROUGHTON:
In the fall of 1779 at the age of 16, living in New Hartford, Litchfield Co., CT, Michael enlisted in the Continental Army, and served at various times until 1783. He started as a Private, was promoted to a Sergeant, and then Drum Major under Captains Benjamin Mills in Colonel Bazaleel Beebe's Regiment, and Captain Stephen Griffin in Samuel Canfield's Regiment. In a letter dated December 8, 1841, at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, Mason G. Smith, Agent, states that "there is the firmest conviction in all branches of the family, derived from traditionary evidence, that the revolutionary services... exceeding three years. The nature of the service, consisting of numerous tours of duty, under different engagements, renders the proof of the same, at this time, when the, when the names of the officers can be but partially recollected, extremely difficult."
According to the History of Poultney, VT, "Michael became a land holder in that part of the town of Wells which is now the south part of Poultney, April 29, 1786." This statement substantiated by deposition by Michael's brother, Samuel, dated December 3, 1840, which states that Michael "and his wife Sarah lived together as man and wife in Connecticut till 1786, when they moved into Wells, in Vermont." According to Samuel's deposition. "They returned to Connecticut, remained a number of years, returned to Wells, then went to Pawlet in Rutland County, Vermont, where they remained till his death which occurred about 1816..."
In the 1800 Federal census for Wells. VT, Michael and his wife are in the 26-45 age bracket with five sons under age 16. However, by December 17th, 1803, they are "both of Pawlett in the county of Rutland and state of Vermont" when they sold to Sarah's brother, Jonah Richards of Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, "Two Certain tracts of parcels of land... One piece of land lying in Simsbury, the other piece in New Hartford...", "the above mentioned land being the property their Honored Mother lift for her Daughter."
On October 11th, 1782, Michael was sent with Captain Beasher into the county adjacent to Stanford, CT, to look for two men, William Leach, and Judah Woodruff who had deserted from Capt. Abner Grangers Company, Col. Cranfields Regiment.
Moved to Wallingford Twp., Wells, Rutland Co., VT in 1786.
