  • Notes
    • Daniel M. Bare was the president of the Roaring Spring Bank at Roaring Spring, Pa. and practically the founder of the many industries which made this a busy, prosperous modern town in its day and of the town of Roaring Springs itself. He was well known in the business community all over Pennsylvania and in his own community is justly considered in the light of a benefactor. He grew up on his fathers farm in Morrisons Cove, Pa and remained at home until he was 24 years old and then went to Loysburg, in Bedford County, where he engaged in the mercantile and flour business for several years. He then came to Roaring Springs. As early as 1866 he became one of the partners in a paper manufacturing enterprise at Roaring Springs the original name being Eby, Morrison and Company, (John Eby and John Morrison). In 1770 the mill was built by Daniel Neff but was burned down by an Indian war party, after Daniel Neff had killed two of the parties scouts, who were endeavoring to obtain his scalp. Later it merged into Morrison, Bare and Cass and remained under this name until 1886. The mill was noted because it ran day and night. In 1880 the firm built a paper mill at Tyrone, Pa of which John Morrison became manager while Mr. Bare assumed the management of the mill at Roaring Spring. He continued as the manager until 1899 when E.G. Bobb became active manager. The business was incorporated in 1907 as D.M. Bare Paper Company which produced daily about 25 to 30 tons of paper daily. They made super-calendered and machine finish book papers, lithograph, mimeograph and white flats and employed over 200 people. He was involved in a number of business adventures. He was one of the founders of the Roaring Springs Bank established in 1902 of which he was President. In about 1888 he was one of the four founders of the Roaring Spring Blank Book Company. He had trade connections all over the United States. Mr. Bare had no particular training in this line, his only educational advantage being that secured in the district schools of Bedford County, Pa. where he, after graduating, had taught school for several years. He married Miss Sarah Eby and they were members of the Church of God and he serves on the board of Elders.
