Notes |
- Abraham Alloway Strange received 393 acres in Fluvanna County, Virginia from his father in February 1778, just weeks before his marriage to Mollie Moore. In October 1778 he was granted 250 acres in Wilkes County, North Carolina. In December 1779 he was granted 250 acres in Burke County, North Carolina. In May 1782 he bought 260 acres in Amherst County, Virginia from his brother Archelaus A. Strange for 15,000 pounds of tobacco. Abraham was still living in Virginia as late as September 1782 when he is called Abraham Strange. He and his family moved from Virginia to North Carolina before 1787, when they settled at the Middle Fork of the Johns River in Burke County on 250 acres purchased from John Medlock. A note regarding the transfer of this land calls him Abraham Strongalways. This family probably moved from Virginia to North Carolina with the Coffey and Israel families, as their sons-in-law Solomon and Isom Israel were brothers, as were their sons-in-law William and James Coffey. Their daughter-in-law Elizabeth Coffey was probably another of the same family. There is a 4 February 1801 deed between Abraham A. Strange and Joel Coffey, 5 for 1 acre ... being of Robert Whitesides old tract ... Warriors Creek. The deed was signed by Abraham Strange, and witnessed by Eli Coffey, William Alloway, and John W. Strange. [Wilkes Co. Deed Book C-1:181 In 1802 Abraham Alloway Strange is mentioned as living in Burke County, North Carolina: "Abraham Alloway Strange of Fluvanna County, Virginia owing 38 pounds 6-1/2 pence by account, Thompson, Snodgrass & Co. He moved to North Carolina about 15 years ago in good circumstances. He is living in Burke County on the Yadkin River, still reputed solvent." [From reports of William H. Henning, 15 June 1802, quoted in "British Mercantile Claims (1775-1803)", in Virginia Genealogist, 6:148] Abraham and his family later moved across the mountain to the Warrior Fork Branch of the Yadkin River in Wilkes (now Caldwell) County, an area known as the "Happy Valley" region. Here Abraham built the first brick home in what is now Caldwell County, at Cheeks Crossroads, north of Lenoir, off Highway 321. They were living here as early as 1790 when "Abram Alloway" appears on the Census of Wilkes County. They belonged to the Upper Yadkin Baptist Church. Abraham's will is dated 1815 and bequeaths his property in Wilkes County. Estate proceedings were filed in Caldwell County.
