    • ALMA W. THORNTON, 93, PIONEER OF COVERED WAGON DAYS, DIES
      ---------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Alma M. Thornton, 93, a covered-wagon pioneer of north central Idaho, died of infirmities yesterday at 7:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lewiston, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Her home was at Orofino since 1941 except for a short time at Lewiston.

She was one of the hearty mid-western natives who had lived in a sod hut, traveled by ox-drawn wagon, and endured the hardships of an old time self-subsistence farm.

She was active in later years in serving her church, The Orofino First Church of God, and in making such things as rugs, including one that placed first in the Clearwater County fair a few years ago.

She was born March 29, 1878, in Jasper County, Iowa, one of 14 children of Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Alloway. The family lived in a sod house for 12 years at Beaver city, Iowa, where the father homesteaded.

She was married to Owen W. Thornton on March 9, 1878 at Beaver City, and they came to Idaho by wagon train in 1900 to settle at Southwick to farm. They went to Fraser in Clearwater County 16 years later to homestead and farm until his death in 1940.

She moved to Orofino the following year and came to Lewiston for a short time in the 1960's to be near her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jack (Viola) Aggar. She returned to Orofino and entered the Orofino Convalescent Center in 1969.

She had numerous get-togethers with her five generations of relatives in recent years, and she enjoyed telling them about the rugged life of traveling by covered wagon.

"The men killed rabbits, birds, and deer for us to eat," she recently recalled. "At night we burned sage brush, twigs, pine cones, wood -- whatever we could to keep out of the night cold and to cook on our small sheet metal stoves."

Survivors include her daughter at Lewiston, two sons, Leon A. Thornton, Kamiah, and Vern O. Thornton, Orofino, 19 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Eva Butler, Omaha, Neb.

The funeral will be tomorrow at Gilbert's Chapel in Orofino, with the Rev. Oliver C. Bittleston of the Orofino First Church of God officiating. Burial will be at Southwick Cemetery. The family suggests memorials in her name to her church.
