My distant Canadian cousin has written to me about the problem of the extra Mary on the 1850 census. A Mary also appears on the 1851 Canada census with James & Nancy but it says 8 years old (conflict in age) and there is another child, Matilda, looks like 2 years old. James & Nancy's son, Robert, had a daughter Matilda (b 1854). He also had a daughter born in 1844 named Elisa. I'm just speculating here, but maybe Elisa went by name Mary. In any event, my cousin and I are guessing that the Mary & Matilda are grandchildren, and I'm not adding them under James & Nancy.
I don't have access to Canadian census records. I rely on my Canadian cousin for that research. She's very thorough.
Please note that there is some disagreement about that picture of James and Nancy Abernethy. These things spread like wildfire on the internet. Another site has already picked it up. I hope the site has posted it with the qualifying statement.
Cheers,
Sharon
