      Charles F. Abernathy Sr. 78, born April 25, 1928 in Grant County, IN, died Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill. He was a police officer with the City of Indianapolis, IN for 20 years and drove a school bus for another 20 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 86 in Indianapolis, and the Illinois Sheriffs Assn. Charles also served in the US Navy, during WW II on the destroyer USS BORDELON DDDDR 881. Charles is survived by his wife, Mary L. (Payton) Abernathy of Smithton, Ill.; a son, Charles F. & Julia Abernathy of Shiloh, Ill.; a sister, Marie Hughes of Hillsboro, Ill; two grandchildren, Patrick D. & Teresa Abernathy of Boise, Idaho, and Suzan & Scott Pruitt of Peyton, Colo; and 9 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Condolences may be extended to the family at schildknechtfh.com. Funeral service will be held Monday, January 22, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at Schildknecht Funeral Home, O'Fallon, Ill.Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
