    • SHELBY-- Sarah LaRue Hord Poston, 84, went peacefully into her Lord's arms on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
      Born on Jan. 4, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Jasper Columbus and Genell Black Hord and her maternal grandparents Oscar Clayborne and Theodora "Theadie" Hord Black. In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Allen Hord, Johnston Theodore Hord, Jessie Richard Hord, and Benjamin Clyde Hord; and one sister, Emma Hord Myers.
      A Christian, she was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where she was an adult Sunday School teacher for several years. She was also an active member of the Women's Missionary Union, often serving as president. A former member of New Prospect Baptist Church, she helped Mrs. A. M. Kiser to organize the WMU and served as the first president of the organization there.
      She worked in Cleveland County having served as bookkeeper for the Cleveland County Register of Deeds, Dedmons Livestock, and retired from the Cleveland County Fair.
      She attended Waco High School where she graduated in 1947 as valedictorian of her class.
      She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, entertaining friends, cooking, family reunions and visiting friends. Many of her lifelong friends were made through her Rook Club. She was a member over 60 years.
      Her love was taking a leading part in planning and promoting family reunions for many branches of her family.
      She is survived by her daughter, Anita Poston Hooker and son-in-law Bill Hooker; two granddaughters, Sarah Ellen Kelly and husband Jeb Kelly of Durham, and Elizabeth Anne Hooker of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Pat Ledbetter Hord; and niece, Teresa Ann Hord, both of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Allen Mills Hord and wife Kim Smith Hord; and two great-nieces, Emily and Melissa Hord, all of Katy, Texas.
      Visitation: The body will lie in state from 9:30 to 10 a.m. prior to the service under the Arbor.
      Celebration of Life Service: 10 a.m. Friday under the Arbor at Capernaum Cemetery in Waco.
      Officiating: The Revs. Clinton Padgett, James Lochridge, and Jeff Brendle
      Burial: Will follow in the cemetery. The family will greet friends immediately following the burial.
      Funeral Home: Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
      Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Elizabeth Baptist Church 301 N. Post Road Shelby, NC 28152 or New Prospect Baptist Church c/o Shirley Hord 2076 Fallston Road Shelby, NC 28150.
