    • From Phil Mullen in Fag:

Peter Hord II (c1749-1817) was born in Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia about 1749 on his family farm. His parents were Peter Hord I (c1717-1787) and Antoinette Knowles Hord (c1723-1787). Peter Hord II served in the Virginia militia and saw action in the Revolutionary War. During the War he lost a leg and an eye.

Peter Hord II was married twice, his first marriage was to Honora Wheatley Hord (unk-c1787); they were married on 5/28/1771 in Falquier County, Virginia. They had seven children: Whitney, Elizabeth, Agatha, Reuben, Sarah, Margaret and Anthoret.

Peter's second wife was Rebecca Wilkinson (c1754-unk). When and where they were married is unknown, however it was before 1790 when their first child was believed to have been born. Peter and Rebecca had five children: Richard (c1790-unk), Nathaniel Greene (1794-1855), Peter III (1796-1848), Spillman (c1800-unk), Thomas (unk-unk).

Some suggest that Peter Hord II lived and died in Rockingham County, Virginia, however, there is no evidence to support this claim. He inherited the property where his parents lived; it was the property that his father had inherited from his father, John Hord I, Gentleman. Furthermore, a census report dated 1790 shows him still living in Stafford County. Also, Peter filed a request dated 1805 for a permit to make improvements on his farm there. Peter Hord II's son, Peter Hord III did live for a short time in Rockingham County before moving to Homer, Licking County, Ohio; perhaps this is part of the confusion about Peter Hord II living and dying there.

Peter Hord II died in 1817 intestate. His estate was divided among the children of his first marriage. The children of his second marriage were excluded from receiving any part of their parent's estate. Where Peter and his wives are buried is unknown. Detailed cemetery records in Rockingham provide no evidence that he was buried there as some records suggest but fail to verify. It is possible that they were buried in the Hord Family Cemetery at Shady Grove, Caroline County but none of the more than 40 graves there had any headstones or grave identification.

States: Peter Hord ; married Honor Wheatley ; date of marriage bond May 28, 1771 (See "Virginia Marriage Bonds,"
under Fauquier County, by Crozier). Robert Hord in his manuscript, 1838, states that Peter Hord married a second wife, Rebecca Wilkenson, of Maryland, and had issue by both wives. Peter Hord was a resident of Stafford County, Va., in 1785, as the census for that year shows that he was one of the " Heads of Families " in Stafford County, having " 9 white souls " in his family, owning " i dwelling " and " 3 other buildings." April 1793, " Peter Hord, Junior, presents a petition to erect a mill on his land." (Stafford County Records.) Robert Hord states in his manuscript (1838) that he
was a soldier in the Revolution and " lost an eye and a leg in the War."
