    • BROWN, Mariellen Barnes - A longtime resident of San Mateo, Mariellen passed away peacefully at home Sept. 18, 2005 at the age of 79, from acute leukemia. She joins her beloved husband of 25 years, Horace "Joe" Brown, who died only 10 days prior. Born in New Jersey, September 8, 1926, she is the daughter of the late William and Loretta Dempsey; predeceased by her brother Joseph Dempsey and her sister Sheila McCabe Iovin. She is the loving mother of Barbara Barnes Chittenden and her husband Bob, the late Robert Dempsey Barnes, and the late Sandra Jean Catlin; a devoted grandma to Kim Chittenden, Christine Price and to Jason Catlin and his wife Angie; and adoring great-grandma to Riley Price. She was married to the father of her children, Edward Barnes, for 32 years. Because it was important to her to help others, she studied nursing and in 1947 became a registered nurse and graduated from NYU Bellevue Schools of Nursing at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Many remember her Bellevue nursing cap she proudly wore until she retired. She was also a member of United States Cadet Nurse Corps. After graduation she moved to California and worked at Mills Memorial Hospital for 34 years, retiring in 1987. She was a well-respected member of the management team working as patient care coordinator on the evening shift, touching many lives. On recent hospital stays she was cared for by many loving nurses who had worked for her and admired her through the years. She continued her love of helping mankind by her 25-year involvement as a faithful member at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church where she served in the altar guild and the thrift shop. A longtime, active member and current treasurer of the Funders of San Mateo County Historical Association, which operates the bookstore in the basement of the old county courthouse in Redwood City, she was known as the "Cookbook Lady." She was passionate about the bookstore and instrumental in keeping things going and keeping everyone on their toes. Gentle, kind, sensitive and caring, she will be greatly missed in the community and by her family and friends. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service Sat, Oct. 1, 2pm at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew, One S. El Camino Real, San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Mateo County Historical Association. O'CONNELL'S CHAPEL (650) 345-8585
