- From Find A Grave BL HUGHES:
Captain Josiah is the second son and third child of Samuel and Hannah (Webster) Scribner. He moved with his people to Salisbury about 1757, and afterward became a drover and cattle dealer at Andover, this state. There seems to be some confusion about his marriage. The Grafton County Gazetteer gives the name of his wife as Phebe Cross, while the History of Salisbury says that he was twice married, and that his first wife was named Webster, and that his second was Mrs. Mary A. (White) Farmer.
The names of the thirteen children correspond, except that the History of Salisbury has omitted John. Assuming that its record is correct in other respects, the children of the first marriage were: Samuel, Josiah, Parker and William. The children of the second marriage were: Benjamin F., Isaac W., a physician and author, Jonathan F., Phebe, Hannah, Arethusa. Polly, Mary A. It is probable that John was one of the earlier children. >Genealogical and Family History of N.H., v3, p1015.
The correct mother to his children, in most cases, is uncertain.
Josiah's children without profiles on this page are:
?Samuel, who married November 2, 1796, Catherine Marston, daughter of Paul Smith and Catherine (Elkins) Marston. Catherine was born September 29, 1774 in Andover. Samuel was born August 18, 1774 in Andover and died November 8, 1844 in Washington, Vermont.
?Hannah, who married December 1, 1789, Wadleigh Clough, son of Lieutenant Moses and Molly (Cram) Clough. Hannah and Wadleigh resided in Vermont.
?Josiah who married Hannah Roberts.
?Charlotte, of whom nothing is written.
?William, who was born in 1790 and died in Andover 1857. In 1810 he married Nancy Shepard who was born in New York and died in Andover 1855. Nancy and William lived on the Plain.
?Arethusa, married July 5, 1829, Thomas Cross of Wilmot.
?Isaac W. born in 1808 and died in 1864. He was a physician in Lowell, Mass.
?Finally there is Jonathan, of whom nothing is written.
