    • HOMER DEATHERAGE KILLED

Ray Holt of the Bly neighborhood came in from Swifton, Arkansas Wednesday evening and reports that Homer Deatherage, of near Bly, was shot to death Tuesday morning at the home of his brother whom he was visiting. Deatherage and Holt recently went to Arkansas to pick cotton and Deatherage decided to go over and spend the night with his brother. About daylight Tuesday morning Deatherage went out to milk leaving his visiting brother asleep. The wife reports that while her husband was at the barn a strange man, wearing a black veil over his face came in, took her husband's gun out of the rack over the door, shot the sleeping man in the back and ran out through the field. The wounded man died instantly. The authorities are making an investigation as Deatherage is not known to have had an enemy on earth.
    • A coroner's jury at Swifton, Arkansas has declared that Homer Deatherage came to his death at the home of his brother, Will Deatherage, at the hands of Mrs. Mattie Deatherage or some person known to her.

The testimony she gave before the coroner's jury was rehashed. The article also said the statement around her former home (in Howell County) is divided as to her guilt. It was stated that no plausible motive has been advanced.
    • A jury in the Jackson County Circuuit Court at Newport, Arkansas last week acquitted Mrs. Mattie Deatherage, formerly Miss Mattie Carter of Howell County after a thrilling trial on charges of murdering her brother in law, Homer Deatherage of Bly, Howell County, Missouri on October 13, last.

There was only circumstantial evidence against the woman. Homer Deatherage had just come from Howell County to pick cotton during the winter. He left his family at Bly and went to his brother's home. the next morning as he was asleep in bed he was shot and killed.

Mattie Deatherage insisted all along that while she was preparing breakfast on the fateful morning, a masked assassin entered the room, took a shotgun from the rack above the door and shot Homer while he lay in bed. Mrs. Deatehrage could not fill bond and was lodged in jail on October 31. She has been in jail since that time.

    • Mrs. Mattie Deatherage was cleared of the charge of killing her brother in law, Homer Deatherage last week. The crime occurred last Fall at Swifton, Arkansas and Mrs. Deatherage was tried last week at Newport Arkansas. When first arrested she declared that the nurder was committed by a masked stranger, but at her trial she testified that her husband, Will Deatherage, killed his brother because of jealousy, and claimed that she and the victim had been sweethearts before her marriage.

Will Deatherage has not been indicted.
