GenForum Msg by Mary Gregory on 6 Oct 2002:
My gg grandfather was Sterling Gibb Abernethy,Sr. I was told his father was William Harley Abernathy who married Sarah Melvina Rockett. My g grandfather was Julian Rockett Abernathy son of Sterling and his second wife Agnes Minerva Webb Craven. Sterling and Agnes also had a daughter: Agnes Dow Abernathy.
My grandfather Hosea B. Abernathy was the oldest of 12 children whose parents were Julian Abernathy and Loula Martin.
Agnes Dow Abernathy married J.H. Rowland and they had 5 children. They were active members of the Cannan Baptist Church in Harrell,Ark. The only one of their children to marry was Robert Walter Rowland. He married a cousin named Lois (I have not found out her maiden, yet). They did not have any children. Both were teachers in the schools that were in that area. Robert went by Walter Rowland. There were write ups about them in the Hampton Ark. paper. Agnes, J.H. and all of their children are interred in Dickinson Cemetery at Calhoun Co. Ark. I have not been to this cemetery, yet. I do plan to go and take pictures as I did at Ricks Cemetery.
Sterling, his first wife Elizabeth Carolina Ware, his second wife Agnes Minerva Webb Craven, Julian and wife Loula and some of their children are interred in the Ricks Cemetery at Harrell,Ark. Calhoun co.
With what you have posted takes me back one more generation. Thank you! ( John B. Abernathy and Susannah Harwell).
Can you tell me any more of my family line or who has records to it?
The puzzeling part to this is why did Sterling spell his last name ABERNETHY if his father's was spelt ABERNATHY?
I also notice his children spelt theirs with an A. On Elizabeth Caroline Ware's headstone it is spelt with an A.
Her headstone is a new one and when it was replaced they must have changed the spelling. On his headstone is Sterling Gibb Abernethy,Sr. We do not know who replaced her headstone, but I feel it must have been some of her children. She and Sterling had 8 children: Mary Jane, Martha, James Henry m: Sally Wood (write up in Goodspeed-Bradley County),Sarah Melvina m: Richard Ainsworth, John Ware, Samuel Crawford, Sterling Gibb,Jr., Saletia Carolina m: A.A. Smith.
Again, thank you, for another piece of the puzzle.
