Is there a market for the words of authors ignored and scorned by traditional publishers?
At least two California-based companies are wagering that they possess a keener literary sensibility for electronic titles than New York-based publishers. Do-it-yourself electronic publishers Fatbrain.com, of Santa Clara, and iUniverse.com, in Campbell, are trying to twist the conventional publishing paradigm by allowing amateur and professional authors to publish directly online for royalties ranging from 20 to 50 percent........
.......The company also gave a measure of literary immortality to Daisy Belle Catherine Brown Pier Goldsby Ackley, who died at the age of 93, but whose memoir ''Wagon Wheels A'Rollin' '' was published online with editing and illustrations by her grandson. She began writing her story of wagon train adventure on the Oregon Trail when she was 80.
