History of Yellow Medicine County (MN) 1872-1972, p556 - Echo Township
Eli Broughton, who was the first white settler of Echo township, was a blood relative of Winston Churchill. His family arrived i n America nineteen years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.
Eli was born in New York state in 1828. He served in the Civil War and, after being wounded, came to Minnesota and took an Echo township homestead in 1869. His wife, Maria, and six children had been left inSalina, PA, while he established a home. Two years later he sent for his young family. In Chicago one of the boys, Elisha ran away and hid while they were waiting for a train to take them to St. Paul, Minnesota. The distraught mother, in the excitement, forgot to check the baggage onto the next train. She gave the checks to the conductor but never saw either the conductor or the baggage again. They eventually arrived at Redwood Falls and completed their journey to the homestead with oxen.
Grasshoppers took the crops in 1872. Eli heard there was a need for carpenters in the booming young town of Minnesota Falls so he went there to work. Maria and the children tended the cows and the chickens but, after a number of bad storms, the family of the first settler of Echo township followed its head to Minnesota Falls Village. It was eight years later that Minnesota Falls village was ravaged by flood waters following the winter of 1880-8l . Most of the houses were moved to Granite Falls and Eli Broughton's was the last one standing.
History of Yellow Medicine County (MN) 1872-1972, p683 - Echo Township
The village was served with mail by both water and rail after the Milwaukee tracks were laid. Eli Brougbton had the contract to carry mail from the old Milwaukee station north of the T.H. 212 lookout to the boat landing below the falls, from where he took it downriver to Red wood Falls. Sometimes when Eli was busy he would ask the oldest girls to take the bag from the station to the boat. The girls would take the bag from the station and roll it downhill to the ri ver instead of carrying it. Some one from town saw it, and told Broughton. He "tanned their hides" and later lost the job. When the tracks were laid through Granite Falls the railroad established a station on the east or Chippewa county side of the river, about a mile east of the river, near where the Gerold Swenson farm is now located in Granite Falls township (Section 1, ll5-39 Chippewa County). With fine disregard of the existence of the village down the river , H. & D. designated the station, opened in Feb!
ruary 1879 , as Minnesota Falls Station. A grain elevator and store followed, and one dwelling was erected. The store was abandoned in 1881, and the elevator burned down.
The first assessment in Redwood Co., MN, was taken 8/1/1868. C. P. Griswold had land in section 31 of Delhi Twp. and some in Redwood Falls Twp. Pulaski Broughton, for his part, had land in Redwood Falls (twp?) and P. B. (Pulaski Barnes) Broughton had land in Redwood Falls Twp. ("The History of Redwood County, Minnesota", Franklyn, 1916.) There was also a Michael Broughton who had some land right next to some land Lester Griswold sold in Beaver Twp. (Crawford Co., PA) in 1852.
In 1870 Minnesota, Redwood Falls, Redwood County, p. 26, are:
Griswold, C P, 38, farmer, b. NY, $4000 rl & $400 pers estate

Michael Broughton 62 VT, Sarah 48 Canada,, Eli 22 NY, Truman 17 NY, Betsey I. 15 NY, Pulaski B. 8 PA, Francis E. 6 PA, Addison P. 4 PA
Came to Crawford Co., PA in the fall of 1835, 50 acre woodland. Moved to Beaver Twp. in 1850."Sarah" is probably a second wife, as a letter from Helen Landphair said that the wife of Michael was buried in Genessee Co., NY. The children are all listed as those of the first wife, however, it is possible some are from the second marriage. In fact, if Mareba died before Michael came to Pennsylvania, the last 3 children were born in PA.
"History of Crawford co., Pennsylvania" p. 788, claims that Michael
"...died in the fall of 1859 leaving seven children out of a family of thirteen by his second wife, who is now with her third husband, Lorenzo Hammond, in Ashtabula County, Ohio."
